Podcasts Walking Tours

Enjoy our new podcast series! We miss the walking tours, home tours, and lectures too. It will be so wonderful to see you all-as well as new faces-when conditions finally allow that to happen. Before that, the safety of our members and tour goers, as well as our own team, must remain our first priority. We have postponed all tours until further notice.

In the meantime, if you’d like to take a walk around the community, download one of our podcasts first! They’ll keep you company on your walk and you’ll learn more about the extraordinary community we call Mission Hills. Links to the series are posted below. All you need to do is download or access the podcast from your Apple or Google Podcasts app, or download the free Anchor app to your smartphone (available on each tour page) and you’re set to go. Make sure to download any maps or other content that may be a part of your particular podcast tour, and maybe grab some earphones and a mask. You’ll have a very genial tour guide with you via the podcast app on your phone! Our first tour explores the early commercial and residential designs of master builder Nathan Rigdon-it’s fascinating!

If you haven’t done podcasts before, you’ll be surprised how easy it is. Then let us know what you think! There is no charge for these podcasts, but to help keep MHH afloat during these tough times, if you are able, we ask that you support us with whatever voluntary donation you can. Thank you and we’ll see you as soon as we can!

It's A Walk In The Park…Or IS It?

October is the perfect month to take a walk in the local park and remember the thousands of people buried beneath your feet. Most locals know that Pioneer Park was once a cemetery, but there is so much more to the story of how we came to have our treasured and oft-used neighborhood park. Its history is unique and sometimes surprising. Some of the people buried there were early pioneers of San Diego. If not for the presence of their graves, it’s unlikely the ground would have remained free of housing development to become our park. So join us in remembering them and help them come alive briefly. We don’t want them to come back and remind us who they were! Happy Halloween from Mission Hills Heritage.

The Art and Craft of the Craftsman Bungalow

The Mission Hills of today developed in earnest during the early 1900s. Among the most popular architecture of the time was the Craftsman bungalow. In this podcast, listeners will learn to appreciate its far-flung influences, from the 1893 Chicago’s World’s Fair to India, Great Britain, and Japan.

Walk with your personal guide on a quiet area of North Mission Hills to discover the bungalow’s history and myriad influences. Elements that are readily recognizable will be presented, as well as those that take a keener eye to detect.

Haven’t yet heard the podcast about Nathan Rigdon? Information presented on that walk is the perfect prelude or coda to “The Art and Craft of the Craftsman Bungalow.”

Master Builder Nathan Rigdon in Mission Hills

This podcast walking tour explores the work of master builder Nathan Rigdon. Those familiar with historic Mission Hills will recognize the simple but elegant four-square Craftsman and Prairie style homes with prominent front porches and low cobblestone walls that appear on many neighborhood streets. Often, such homes are the handiwork of minister-turned-builder, Nathan Rigdon. During the ten years he lived in this community, Rigdon built scores of homes and several commercial buildings, most of which still stand. Nathan Rigdon’s thoughtfully planned homes are emblematic of Mission Hills, having helped form the character of this neighborhood for over a century. The tour includes the fascinating backstory of Rigdon and explores the progression of his work in this neighborhood.
