Come meet your neighbors, learn about one of the great architectural styles in Mission Hills and support Mission Hills Heritage.
About the Speaker
Our lead presenter is a Mission Hills resident and Templeton Johnson enthusiast, Dr. Gordon Hunt, who lives in a Templeton Johnson-designed home. Dr. Hunt has researched Templeton Johnson extensively and will lead us on a slide-show of Templeton Johnson homes in Mission
Hills, focusing on the architectural features that define these structures.
About the Historic Home
The venue for this event is the historically designated “William Templeton Johnson House” which took six years to build from 1911 to 1917. William Templeton Johnson designed the house in the Spanish Eclectic style for him and his wife, Clara’s primary residence.
About William Templeton Johnson
Designated a Master Architect by the City of San Diego, William Templeton Johnson (1877 – 1957) was one of San Diego’s premier architects during the period from about 1918 through the 1930s. Classically trained at the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France, Templeton Johnson designed in many architectural styles but preferred the Mediterranean and related styles.
Known for designing many residences, his primary impact in San Diego was his design of public structures such as museums, schools and libraries, including the La Jolla Public Library and Atheneum, the Juniperro Serra Museum, the Samuel Fox building, Balboa Park’s Museum of Natural History and the County Administration Building. Templeton Johnson and his wife Clara lived in Mission Hills for many years and the neighborhood is graced with many fine residences he designed and built.
